Decumbiture Charts Herbalism and Disease Diagnosis In England
In the seventeenth century in England a primary method of diagnosing and treating diseases was a chart cast at the time the patient first ”took to their bed”, when the patient first declared they were ill and began their period of staying prone to fight the illness.
This chart was known as a “decumbature chart” by the treating astrologer-herbalist who used the planets and setup of the chart to judge if the subject was gravely ill or would eventually recover. Herbs were chosen appropriately and this method was widely used.
At first manuscripts on herbalism were available only in Latin but the herbalist-astrologer Nicholas Culpepper published such a book in English to give wide access and it was embraced by the masses.
Such famous astrologers as William Lilly, the horary genius, published information on the astrological correspondence of astrological informations with herbs.
